Guided Meditation Group Sessions

When you need some timeout to relax and de-stress, come along to my guided Meditation Group – it’s a small, informal group and you don’t need any previous experience. These evening Guided Meditation Sessions offer a safe space to simply be still, allowing yourself to breathe and connect with yourself and to feel relaxed and peaceful.

Sessions are about an hour.  The guided meditation will last around 30 minutes. Afterwards we share our experiences and you are welcome to stay and chat or chill over a cup of tea.  If you would like to bring a mat and cushions to lie down, please do and you may find it useful to bring a notebook.

What is Guided Meditation?

Guided meditation is meditation with the help of a narrator who acts as a guide, talking you through a journey, where you enter a state of deep relaxation and inner stillness. It is a powerful way of eliminating stress and brings about positive personal changes.

Guided Meditation is useful for people who are new to meditation as it is easy to do. It’s also a way for people more experienced with meditation, to have a deep and more vivid experience, helping them deal with specific issues.

How do you typically react to difficulties in life?

Do you instinctively fight uncomfortable experiences or find fault in yourself when things go wrong?

What if, instead, you took a moment to comfort yourself when you felt bad—as you would do for a good friend or a loved one?

 

Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is an evidence based, 8-week training programme designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion. Based on the groundbreaking research of Kristin Neff and the clinical expertise of Christopher Germer, MSC teaches core principles and practices that enable us to respond to difficult moments in our lives with kindness, care and understanding.

Rapidly expanding research demonstrates that self-compassion is strongly associated with emotional well-being, less anxiety, depression and stress, maintenance of healthy habits such as diet and exercise, and satisfying personal relationships. And it’s easier than you think.

Through discussion, meditation, and experiential exercises, you will learn how to:

  • Practice self-compassion in daily life
  • Understand the empirically-supported benefits of self-compassion
  • Motivate yourself with kindness rather than criticism
  • Handle difficult emotions with greater ease
  • Transform challenging relationships, old and new
  • Manage caregiver fatigue
  • Practice the art of savouring and self-appreciation

 

What to expect

Programme activities include meditation, short talks, experiential exercises, group discussion, and home practices. MSC is a workshop rather than a retreat. The goal is for participants to directly experience self-compassion and learn practices that evoke self-compassion in daily life.

MSC is primarily a compassion training programme rather than mindfulness training, although mindfulness is the foundation of self-compassion.  MSC is also not psychotherapy insofar as the emphasis of MSC is on building emotional resources rather than addressing old wounds.  Beneficial change occurs naturally as we develop the capacity to be with ourselves in a kinder, more compassionate way.

Compassion is a positive, energizing emotion. However, it is said that “love reveals everything unlike itself.” While learning self-compassion, some difficult emotions may arise.   MSC teachers are committed to providing a safe and supportive environment for this process to unfold, and to making the journey enjoyable for everyone.

MSC includes 8 weekly sessions of 2 3/4 hours each, in addition to a 4-hour retreat.  Prior to registering, participants should plan to attend every session and practice mindfulness and self-compassion up to 30 minutes per day throughout the programme.

Prerequisites

No previous experience with mindfulness or meditation is required to attend MSC. To insure safety, participants are asked to provide background information when they register for the programme.

The following book is highly recommended as a companion to the MSC course

  • The Mindful Self-Compassion Workbook by Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer

 

Additional recommended books, before or during the course, are:

Facilitators:

Linda is an experienced counsellor and is qualified in teaching Mindfulness and Mindful Self-Compassion Courses. She is passionate about helping people develop the skills to build resilience to heal through their difficulties and make positive changes in their life.

Linda has both personal and professional experience in valuing mindfulness and the nourishing skills of self-compassion. Bringing them into daily life has been transformative in dealing with difficult emotions and developing a kinder and more compassionate relationship with self and others, resulting in enhanced wellbeing and a better quality of life.
