WHAT IS IT?
Bowen is a unique non-invasive holistic therapy consisting of a sequence of moves using light pressure over muscles and soft tissue, interspersed with rest periods. The Bowen Technique was developed by Tom Bowen in Australia and named after him following his death is 1982. It is now the fastest growing complementary therapies in Europe.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The work sets about change in the body and the body then takes over and healing takes it’s natural course. Many of the gentle moves a Bowen Therapist makes are made over recognised trigger points, acupuncture points and meridians or on specific points on muscles and joints associated with the lymphatic system, muscle reflexes and balance. Bowen works primarily, (but not exclusively) with the fascia – the web of connective tissue that “wraps” the whole body. One of the most profound effects Bowen can have is shifting the ANS (Autonomic Nervous System), which controls over 80% of bodily functions, releasing stress at a deep level. As a holistic therapy the whole person is treated rather than just a condition , but there are specific procedures also used to help with certain issues. e.g. frozen shoulder, knee pain, ankle pain, jaw pain.
Studies carried out by Bowen Therapists and analysed by the Bowen Therapist European Register (BTER) on back pain in 2005 and 2007 showed that more than 90% of people treated experienced either complete or significant relief after just three treatments. The 2008 studies in shoulder / neck pain also showed spectacular results treating people of varying ages and lifestyles who had never tried Bowen before and 86% reported partial to full recovery after three sessions.
HOW WILL I FEEL AFTER A TREATMENT?
Deeply relaxed! Also if you have had Bowen for a specific musculo-skeletal condition e.g. frozen shoulder it is very often the case that you will see an instant improvement in range of movement.
WHAT DO I DO AFTER A TREATMENT?
Drink plenty of water to keep well hydrated and flush toxins from the body. Avoid other “hands on” therapy during the course of Bowen e.g. massage, reflexology, physiotherapy, osteopathy (homeopathy and herbal treatment is fine) Avoid sitting for prolonged periods of time on day of treatment. Just walking around for a few minutes every half hour will allow the lymph system to flush out toxins mobilised during the treatment. Remember to treat yourself with care for 2 to 4 days to avoid re-injury if a particular action had caused a strain or injury. i.e. If you hurt your shoulder playing golf, stay off the golf course for a few days!! Expect the recovery process to take up to 7 days. It may be a whole week before you have allowed the treatment to bring about change. All responses are good! The body is making changes and healing but if you are worried about anything you should telephone your therapist.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Short-term(acute) injury is usually resolved in one to three treatments, while long-standing (chronic) conditions may require several more sessions.
Many clients return for regular “top-up” treatments to boost their feeling of health, strengthen their immune system and maintain good skeletal alignment
